Description
Same, west cemetery. Souedias Street. A. Soteriou (then Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that continuing excavation revealed 37 more Classical-Roman tombs (cist and tile graves and enchytrismoi of infants and children). The cist tombs, of limestone slabs, usually contained multiple burials and almost always reburial of bones. Goods from these graves comprised glass vessels (lachrymateria), red-figure lekythoi, lamps, aryballoi, skyphoi, terracotta loomweights, and bronze and silver coins. Tomb LXIV (a burial in a fissure) contained gilded terracotta jewellery in the form of buttons, rosettes and droplets, and a gilded bronze ring with an incised depiction on the bezel. The Roman tomb LXXVII, which contained one original burial and two reburials, had rich goods, including many bone pins, glass lachrymateria of all sizes, a bronze fibula (?), and bronze fastenings and rings which likely belonged to a wooden container or jewellery box.
