NIKOPOLIS - Monument of Octavian Augustus - 2003

Nikopolis, Monument of Octavian Augustus. K. Zachos and Th. Kyrkou (ΙΒ' ΕΠΚΑ) report on continuing excavation in the west part of the north stoa. This revealed the toichobate, in opus quasi reticulatum with in places alterations in opus testaceum incorporating also architectural terracottas (similar alteration is noted in the retaining wall of the lower terrace). The eastern side of the toichobate is, however, in semi-worked sandstone blocks. Between the toichobate and the middle stylobate was a dense destruction layer with tile of both Corinthian and Laconian type. Lead water pipes ran parallel to the stylobate.

In the centre of the toichobate, a Π-shaped exedra (a shrine) opened towards the interior of the stoa. Inside was a plaster bench along the north wall with a statue base in situ upon it and three other bases (one marble plinth and two stone constructions), and a marble stele with a Classicising relief depiction of a woman. A water channel ran around the outside of the toichobate and the exedra.
