Description
Leukas, Leukas-Nidri road, Kalligoni junction. G. Pliakou (ΙΒ' ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a 38m-long stretch of the north arm of the city fortification circuit (Fig. 1: 3). The main phase is isodomic (in emplekton, with two worked faces, rubble full, and cross-connectors). A small section at the northeast edge of the excavated area differs in appearance with the introduction of polygonal masonry on a different foundation (it is not yet possible to ascertain whether this is an earlier construction, although this is likely, given that similar masonry is evident to the west and elsewhere in the circuit). The isodomic phase of construction appears to have been a cursory and possibly hasty event, using unworked blocks and spolia. It may be linked to the siege and capture of the city by Flamininus in 198BC. Finally, in the highest level was the millstream of a now derelict 19th-century watermill, which was operative into the first decades of the 20th century.
