NIKOPOLIS - Roman Odeion - 2002

Nikopolis, Roman odeion. K. Zachos (ΙΒ' ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation to clarify details of the plan.

Research around the north wall of the postscaenei focused on the main entrance to the skene, to establish the height, nature and date of the structure. Collapsed sections of wall include a portion of one of the semicircular niches which decorated the scaenae frons at the central entrance to the skene. Below the brickwork of the walls lay an in situ base of four limestone blocks: in contact with this to the north, a paved road led north from the odeion towards to eastern part of the city. The north wall of the postscaenei was shown to continue to the east.

Clearance of the northeast stairway revealed an additional five steps beyond those uncovered in 2001, plus part of the south parapet, revealing a stairway of similar proportions to that in the southwest. A section of wall from an unidentified later structure was found in contact with the south parapet. A stairway immediately outside the east paraskenion, oriented north-south, marks the east boundary of the monument.
