Description
Arta (anc. Ambracia), junction of Herakleitou and Komninon Streets (Georgoula property). A. Angeli (ΙΒ' ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation at the northeast edge of the ancient city, just inside the walls (Fig. 1: 246). The scattered building remains uncovered are not readily connected into any overall plan. One strong and well-constructed north-south wall, Classical in date, of large isodomic limestone masonry, was revealed to a height of 3.76m (11 courses), although the high water table prevented investigation of the foundations. A second wall of similar construction forms a corner with it. A late Classical water channel ran to the east. North of the walls was a small section of a Hellenistic east-west road: in a second phase of construction, a pavement was added along its north side. Three Byzantine rubbish pits containing much plain and glazed pottery disturbed the earlier levels.
