ARTA - Anc. Ambracia - 2001

Arta (anc. Ambracia), Zalongou Street (Strevina property). Th. Kontogianni (ΙΒ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery, in excavation for the extension of a building, of parts of a Classical house (walls of at least three rooms and successive building phases). In the southwest room was a semi-circular hearth of limestone slabs and pebbles (with evidence of burning), to the north of which a limestone- and sandstone-paved floor covered a plaster-lined water channel running east-west. North of the channel was a room covered in a thick layer of unworked stones and slabs. Bedrock was located on the remainder of the plot.

Small sections of later wall survive across the entire plot. Finds include pottery mostly of the Classical period (fifth- and fourth-century BC) but also of later periods down to post-Byzantine, and a few bronze coin and small metal items.
