Description
Archanes. I. Serpetsidaki (ΚΓ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on finds made in the vicinity of Archanes from 2001 to 2004.
Architectural remains of the Neopalatial period (MMIII-LMIA) at Skoulades Street in Ano Archanes include well-built walls and a stretch of paved floor, as well as fragments of painted plaster, conical cups and part of a pithos.
On the Oustomanolaki-Thomaidou property, pottery and further architectural remains are reported. In the northeast part of the field, a disturbed fill contained Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine sherds and part of a wall. Elsewhere and at greater depth lay domestic architectural remains together with an open-air area. High quality MMIII-LMIA pottery is reported, with everyday pottery is said to be principally medium-sized shapes. Two clay animal figurines, loomweights, a bronze pin and spatula, and obsidian blades were also found. These discoveries demonstrate Neopalatial occupation to the north-east of the monumental building at Tourkogeitonia.
In the northwest part of Kato Archanes, on the Charitou property, lay an LM IIIB rock-cut circular chamber tomb with a 3m-long dromos. It held a sarcophagus with two skeletons, and another two burials in the floor, together with two pots as grave-goods. In front of the blocked entrance lay a conical cup and a small jug. In the vicinity of Archanes, at Galano Papouri, was an LM IIIB elliptical chamber tomb with a sarcophagus (containing two skeletons) and three pots.
