Description
Chania. 15-17 Kanevaro Street (Lionaki-Vlamaki property). M. Andreadaki-Vlasaki (Director General of Antiquities, Ministry of Culture and Tourism) reports on excavation conducted between 1965-1976. Essentially a southwest extension of the Greek-Swedish work in Ag. Aikaterina Square, this revealed continuous habitation from the Prepalatial to Venetian period.
In the west, part of a First Palatial structure with very broad walls yielded MM I pottery (a footed-lamp, an amphora and a pair of cups in the typical white Chaniot clays). To the east lies part of a substantial Neopalatial building - two paved areas (set in plaster), a potential circular column footing and traces of a stairway with associated fresco pieces. Above was a poorly preserved LM IIIA-B house, which produced both local vases and imports. A faience scarab has a parallel in a Knossian tomb. Broadly contemporary at the west is a large rubbish pit containing LM II and IIIA pottery, one animal and four female figurines, a sealstone and two stirrup jar sherds with painted Linear B symbols. Finally in LM IIIC traces of more structures were encountered (two rooms with earth floors).
