Description
Corfu Straits. D. Kourkoumelis (EMA) reports the discovery of three shipwrecks (named Poseidon 1,2 and 3) in the straits between Kerkyra and Paxi in the course of survey by the EMA and the Hellenic Centre for Maritime Research for the construction of the POSEIDON gas pipeline between Greece and Italy.
Poseidon 1 was found at a depth of 1,18om: it carried African amphorae of different types, a 0.3m high marble statue, and the photographic record also shows further amphorae, cooking vessels, and the fabric of the ship. Poseidon 2 was found at a depth of 1,375m: it contained African amphorae, plates, cooking vessels, and various metal items, with sections of the ship also preserved. Both wrecks date to the third century AD.
Poseidon 3 is a 17th- to 18th century wreck found at a depth of 1,260m: the fabric of the ship, its anchors, and cooking, storage, and other vessels. The vessel had Chinese-style decoration.
