Description
Marathon, Tsepi. M. Pantelidou-Gofa (ASA) reports. Tomb 49 was surrounded by a stone peribolos. Two stelai were set to the left and right of the entrance, where a skull and few long bones were found. The tomb was lined with orthostats and covered with two heavy slabs, but it had an open entrance on the east side. The last burial, placed by the entrance, had four vessels, including a miniature amphora and a frying pan with incised concentric circles and a handle in the shape of two feet. The tomb contained at least 14 burials, and among the mass of bones was a miniature round pyxis. The remains of the older burials were set aside and covered with pebbles.
Stone pile 66, previously studied in 2001, was perhaps a tomb. Continued excavation revealed a pile of sherds of large and small vessels covered with stones and pebbles. The most common shapes were skyphoi, small amphorae with incised decoration, and lekanes. It appears that the pots were broken as part of some ritual at the spot where they were found. Between the sherds were two obsidian blades.
