Description
Akti Kalamakiou at the end of Alimou Avenue. K. Kaza-Papageorgiou (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports.
During the Olympic works of 2003-4, a World War II German emplacement built above a Mycenaean rock-cut chamber tomb was removed, revealing the chamber and dromos of the tomb. The dromos (3.5m long and 1.5m wide, oriented east-west) led to an opening into the chamber which was not preserved. Cut into the dromos floor was a deep pit covered by slabs. The rectangular chamber (4.6 x 4m) contained nine pits of various sizes and shapes, some empty, others with bones, pots and other finds.
Despite the destruction caused by the emplacement, numerous finds were recovered: around 15 small pots (prochoes, stirrup jars, amphoriskoi, and kylikes, 5 phi figurines, a bird figurine, an elaborately modelled throne with two seated figures, and various items of jewellery of glass paste and semi-precious stones. The finds date from the end of the 14th through the 13th century BC.
