Description
Alimos. Classical Cemetery and Roads. K. Kaza-Papageorgiou (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation on three building plots.
7 Kleious Street (Rapti – Plevri plot, O.T. 272A). At the eastern foot of the hill of Ag. Annas lay a Π-shaped funerary peribolos of the fourth-century BC (13.6m long on the west, 6.9m on the south, and 1.35m on the north) within which were pit graves with pyres and pot-burials. The peribolos was built above an earlier cemetery of the sixth and particularly the fifth centuries BC. Outside the peribolos were graves of various types: pits, a marble sarcophagus, tile covered graves, built tile graves, enchytrismoi in various forms of vessel, and cremations in deep pits. Goods were mostly lekythoi of the first half of the fifth century BC.
To the west of the peribolos, a 2.5m-wide ancient road ran northeast-southwest, cut into the rock. Much of the sculptural decoration of the monument was found in this road, including a marble stele inscribed with the names of a whole family of Halimousians.
3 Kleious Street (D. Lomvardou plot, O.T. 272A). To the east of Ag. Anna hill and north of the Rapti-Plevri plot was a fourth-century funerary peribolos. In the northeast corner of the plot, the continuation of the road noted above was exposed.
22 Agiou Nikolaou Street (Baxevanidi-Theodoropoulou plot, O.T.55). Part of an ancient road was uncovered southeast of the hill of Ag. Anna, which continues to the west of the tomb peribolos excavated in the Rapti-Plevri plot. A second ancient road on its eastern side ran east-west. Under the south retaining wall, a pit contained fragments of iron slag and sherds of amphorae and lekanes, plus a few sherds of small vessels, mostly of the fourth century BC.
