Description
3 Themistokleous Street (Galaiou – Phalieri – Nisianaki plot, O.T. 241). K. Kaza-Papageorgiou (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports.
Excavation in the area of Ag. Nikolaos, Glyphada (the ancient deme of Aixone), revealed a Π-shaped funerary peribolos. The foundation, cut into bedrock, was preserved to one course (8.08m long on the east side, 7.4m on the south, and 8.4m on the north). Inside, in the centre, was a base (1.4 x 1.3m, 1.25m high) of three courses of square blocks. A parapet built of three courses of slabs was in contact with the south face of the base, set on a lower level. The base must have supported sculptural decoration, many fragments of which had fallen in front of the monument, namely: a marble statue of a lion with the head of a bull between its paws; a fragment of a funerary stele of Hymettan marble carrying the inscription ΑΡΕΣΙΑΣ ΑΡΕΣΙΟΥ ΑΙΞΩΝΕΥΣ; two marble lekythoi with floral decoration on the shoulder; a base of a marble lekythos; part of a marble funerary stele with palmette crown; and parts of other lekythoi.
Inside the peribolos were three cist graves. Tens of fifth- and fourth-century BC miniature and full-sized pots (plates, chytres, lopades, lekythoi) were recovered.
