PIRAEUS, Moschato - 2004

Moschato. Long Walls. M. Petritaki (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of parts of the Long Walls in two building plots.

105 Eleftherias Street (property of V. and N. Orphanoudaki). Remains were uncovered of a rectangular tower (7.79 x 4.95m as preserved) of the first building phase of the south arm of the Long Walls. Remains of its floor and of the outer road were also found, in use from the Classical to Byzantine periods, as well as a Late Roman-Early Christian cemetery. The stone foundation of the tower is preserved (with one course above ground) plus part of the mud brick superstructure to a total height of 2.76m. 3.6m from the tower were the remains of a road with preserved wheel ruts.

Near the tower and along the length of the ancient road was a fourth- to fifth-century AD cemetery containing 30 tombs: 22 tile graves, two enchytrismoi in beehives, two pit graves, a pit grave with tile cover, a built cist, and two pit graves with the remains of animals. All the burials were supine and facing east.

272-274 Thessalonikis Street (Pantelidi property). M. Petritaki (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that part of the south arm of the Long Walls was revealed, its core built round the underlying bed rock (maximum length 23.1m, width 4.8 m in the rock). Six courses were identified to a height of 1.77-2.8m, with part of the mudbrick soma.
