Description
Kaminia – Nikaia.
Classical Cemetery. M. Petritaki (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery on three building plots of graves from the extended Classical cemetery which developed north of the Piraeus fortifications and along the length of an ancient road, parallel to the modern Thivon Avenue.
Dilaveri Street: a marble funerary stele was found on the north side of the street, 26.59m from the junction with Thivon Avenue. The lower part of the stele was preserved, with a relief representation within a frame. 25.5m away was a tile grave (probably of a child) containing no skeletal material but a black-glaze lekythos. 3.32m northwest of this was another child burial in a tile grave containing a limestone false-mouthed alabastron, four miniature vessels, a bronze ring and two iron nails, while outside the grave was a skyphos, a lekythos and many sherds.
Panormou Street: 11.7m from the building line of Dilaveri-Panormou Streets a bronze folding mirror was recovered (the lid was decorated with incised concentric circles). This probably came from a grave destroyed by the laying of electricity cables.
Stratigi Street: 20.5m from the junction with Porou Street, a tile grave was found destroyed. Part of a plate and a black-glaze skyphos was recovered to the south.
