Description
2-4 Vasileos Pavlou Street (Evstathiou property). M. Petritaki (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the excavation of a section of the Piraeus fortifications (length 14.5m, width 3.25m) in an area between the Zea harbour and Mounychia where early topographers had traced the circuit. The wall follows the edge of the rock of the Kastelli hill, breaking at the east where the rock is near-vertical. The outer face was built of stone blocks filled with smaller stones. Inside the fortifications were the remains of a rectangular structure (17 x 3.7m).
Investigation of the area to the southeast revealed: a cluster of 13 bases of dedicatory stelai, plus sculptures and fragments of votives; part of an inscribed dedication to Asklepios; representations of human body parts, mainly from young boys and girls; a headless fourth-century statue of a young girl holding a goose; and fragments of a votive relief.
