Description
Skala, Asklepieion. F. Saranti (then Στ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that cleaning in the sanctuary exposed parts of the northern and western retaining walls. The northern wall, 13m long, is exposed to a height of 9-10m: half way along is a small built anta. The western wall, preserved to a length of 7.5m and height of 3m, has orthogonal masonry on the inner face while the outer has an infill of smaller stones. It was probably moved to the west to increase the terrace area, and the extension wall has a semi-circular continuation. The eastern wall, preserved to a length of 8.5m and a height of 3m, was a double construction: rooftiles were found in its covering layer. A further protective wall ran just east of the sanctuary, next to the Palioskala stream.
Evidence of ancient activity was also found at Kouvaras, on the route to the sanctuary.
