Description
The 6th EBA reports the discovery of an Early Byzantine (sixth-century) bath close to Psila Alonia Square. The building formed part of the Early Byzantine city plan, with its entrance on one of the principal Roman streets which linked the city centre with the harbour. Typologically, this is a small bath, preserving the apodyterium, tepidarium and caldarium are preserved in series. It produced a variety of finds including glass lachrymateria, pieces of pumice, coins, groups of sherds and three intact amphorae, and a nummus of Anastasius I (491-518). Construction of the building began before 518: it went out of use when the hypocaust was blocked between the tepidarium and the caldarium (noting three eighth- to ninth-century amphorae placed there) and the area turned over to storage.
