Koropi. O. Kakavogianni and K. Douni (Β’ ΕΠΚΑ) report on excavation in two parts of the Early Helladic settlement.
Lidl property and Chatzi Street. Work continued to the south of the EH II building and in the nearby Chatzi street. Immediately south of the building were a few wall remains.
25m south of the large building, on Chatzi street, were parts of a EH I building (5.3 x 3.5m) with a south wall built in herringbone style (Fig. 1). To the west are auxiliary structures. The building continues to the south under the neighbouring property.
A large number of important finds were made, including EH I and Early Cycladic I pottery, a terracotta head of a bull in brown Urfinis (Fig. 2), and remains of metal working (slag, moulds for metal tools, and bowl-shaped litharge).
38 Vas. Konstantinou Street (Megagianni property). Illegal excavation on this plot, within the archaeological site of the Health Centre 100m south of Chatzi street, caused extensive damage. Rescue excavation followed (Fig. 3).
At the east and west part of the plot is a strong EH II wall (40m long, 1.2m wide, 0.6m tall) running east-west, with a pit to the south of it. At the northeast corner of the property were EH II walls, which continued to the east below the street and to the north within the neighbouring property.
Above these remains is a known Geometric cemetery to the north and east, some of which has now been destroyed. Only the north half of a cist grave is preserved, containing at least 10 pots (pyxides, skyphoi, and prochoes) of the middle of the eighth century BC (Fig. 4).
To the east were storage pithoi and built silos of the Late Roman - Early Byzantine periods.
