Description
Varabas. O. Kakavogianni (Β’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on survey in this area (Fig. 1).
From the Erasinos to the airport, around and to the north of the church of the Panagia of Varabessas, pass many ancient roads which connect the demes of the Spata area (Agnous, Angeli, Myrrinous). Outside the southeast corner of the airport, at the central water treatment works of Mesogeia (site 1), ca. 200m northeast of the Panagia where the street crosses the first dam of the Erasinos (site 2), and ca. 50m south of the church, on the north bank of the river (site 3), were scattered building remains, tile, and Late Classical pottery. Many architectural members (limestone blocks, drums, and bases) were concentrated around the church. At the niche above the door was a marble inscription Η ΜΗΤΗΡ ΤΗ ΘΥΓΑΤΡΙ, later removed to Brauron Museum.
Ca. 150m northeast of the church, on the west side of the asphalt road at the crossing with the road towards the ancient tower at Gkouri Bim (Site 5), ancient tombs were found during building works.
