Description
Koropi. O. Kakavogianni (Β’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on survey in the ancient deme Prospalta, the centre of which lies to the north of Kalyvia, to the west of Strongylopoula hill (Fig. 1). Sherds of Classical domestic pottery and building materials were found in the fields where the road to Kalyvia crosses a farm road which to the east leads to Markopoulou and to the west to Ag. Marinas Avenue (site 1). By the road which heads east, 2km before the junction with Ag. Marinas Avenue, remains of ancient buildings were found with Archaic pottery (site 2).
North of the summit of Strongylopoula hill (site 3) were remains of a probable tower. At its east side, north of Strongyli hill, were the remains of successive retaining walls, probably for arboriculture. Southeast of Strongylopoula is the Kamara or Kamariza hill. On a small plateau at the top of this hill and on the southern side were the remains of a prehistoric structure, Bronze Age pottery and stone tools (site 4).
By Ag. Marinas Avenue, to the north of the road to Ag. Georgios, were building remains (site 5). Further south, in the area of Mikro Metochi, immediately to the north of Charavgis Street and ca. 600m from the crossing with Eirinis Street, were two wells and the remains of a large ancient building, perhaps a farm house.
In Ag. Marina, south of the church courtyard, was the kioniskos of Geisia of Lamptrai. Northeast of the ancient well of Alykou and north of Themistokleous Street which leads to the Zoitsa quarry, were remains of a tomb on the surface.
South of the low hill of Kontra Retsina were the foundations of an ancient square tower, and to the north a large rectangular peribolos (60 x 25m) with walls of rough stones 1.2m thick and preserved to a height of 1m. There are no building remains within it, but the construction is reminiscent of the small Hellenistic fortifications on the hills of Attica. Above the tower was a deep natural pit, probably the entrance to a cave.
The area to the north of the Konta Retsina hill and up to the hills of Kiapha Thiti and Kontra Gkliate (the prehistoric acropolis of Lamptrai) had scattered surface remains of buildings and Classical to Roman pottery. This is evidently the core of the ancient deme of Lower Lamptrai. At the Thiti site, between Keas and Epidavrou Streets, other building remains indicate an extensive residential area (Fig. 2).
