Description
Koukaki, 39 Propylaion Street (property of E. and P. Kotroni). P. Bougia, (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the excavation of a Hellenistic road, part of a drainage channel with a well, and four child graves of the second half of the third century AD (Fig. 1).
The road (preserved width 4.65m) was composed of at least five layers, the first dating to the end of the second century BC. Its retaining wall was built of limestone slabs, tile, and architectural spolia. The south side of the road was not found.
A 5.6m long channel ran north of the inner side of the retaining wall: a circular pit contained fragmentary limestone architecture, part of a clay theatrical mask, and late Hellenistic pottery.
The graves included one enchytrismos and two tile graves of children laid supine with heads to the west. A third-century AD trefoil-mouthed oinochoe lay at the head of one. These burials are probably to be related to the cemetery of the second half of the third century AD which contained predominantly child burials, previously excavated on Propylaion 34 (property of Th. Papadimitriou).
