Description
Plaka, 5 Pharmaki Street (Skalidi property). Th. Iliopoulos (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation of this 180m² plot which revealed Late Roman and Byzantine building remains (Figs 1,2). The foundations of a Late Roman complex, previously traced in the neighbouring plot at the junction of Pharmaki and Aphroditis Streets, were further revealed. Small successive areas, with a thick destruction layer containing much of the superstructure, tile and brick, as well as some large pieces of wall painting with marbling. Several marble sculpture fragments were recovered, plus a funerary kioniskos with the inscription …ΑΠΑΜΕΥΣ, a few worn coins and a knuckle bone inscribed ΕΡΩΣ. Excavation to bedrock between the foundations of the Late Roman complex revealed two undisturbed Hellenistic areas with small fragments of clay pipes, and at bedrock a few Mycenaean sherds.
