Description
Vasilissis Sophias Avenue – Akadimias – Kriezotou – Panepistimiou – Voukourestiou Streets. O. Zachariadou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that excavation for natural gas lines revealed a series of water channels and a grave.
At Vas. Sophias Avenue and Irodotou Street, a channel of bricks and mortar with a covering of marble slabs ran south-north. Further along Vas. Sophias, at number 17 was a built channel oriented southwest-northeast; at 13, two walls of unworked stones and mortar, and a clay pipe ran southeast-northwest; at 11 were two superimposed walls of unworked stones; and at 7, a stone built channel with marble covering, running south-north.
At Kriezotou 7, a channel of unworked stones and mortar ran south-north. At Kriezotou and Valaoritou, a clay pipe ran south-north. On Voukourestiou, 18.9m from the junction with Stadiou, a Late Classical monolithic limestone sarcophagus set in a trench in the schist bedrock contained bones, an iron strigil, and two limestone alabastra.
