Description
Theseio, Irakleidon 40 (property of Ch. Nikoloutsopoulou). Th. Iliopoulos (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation in this 306m2 plot (Fig. 1) which revealed pottery of almost all periods from the Mycenaean to the Late Roman. The plot is within the ancient city walls and on the north edge of the road leading to the Agora. Previous excavation in the neighbouring plot to the north (Poulopoulou 29) had revealed a small Late Archaic sanctuary.
In the southern part of the plot were four Geometric tombs, including two Late Geometric enchytrismoi in horizontally-set amphorae which contained small pots (kyathoi, prochoes, oinochoai) and outside an oinochoe by the neck. Tombs 3 and 4 were surrounded by two small walls at a right angle, perhaps part of their peribolos. By the Geometric tombs and at the edge of the plot was part of a Late Geometric building with an apse just visible at its south side. Beneath the floor was a pyre, probably of the Early Geometric period, cut into the rock.
Archaic ceramics and figurine fragments from the end of the sixth century BC are perhaps to be associated with the neighbouring Late Archaic sanctuary at Poulopoulou 29.
From the Classical period several walls are preserved, of which three appear to form a small rectangular room. Under one was a foundation level of the fifth century BC with fragments of tile and sherds.
In the Roman period a bath or house with bathing facilities was built in this area.
