Description
Junction of Phokionos and Mitropoleos Streets. V. Orphanou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the excavation of an area of 60m2 for the ventilation system of the metro line between Monastiraki and Syntagma stations.
A. Late Roman-Early Christian period (fourth-sixth centuries BC): at a depth of 2.93-3.81m, the oldest preserved building phase comprised eleven rectangular rooms which developed around a central court. One area had a multi-coloured mosaic floor (max size 3.3 x 3.4m) damaged by a 12th-century storage silo (Figs 3, 4). A number of thresholds leading from the central area suggest that it is an atrium.
B. Byzantine period (11th-12th centuries AD): five rooms with three storage silos and a piriform cistern were revealed at a depth of 2-2.9m.
C. Modern remains from the Ottoman period to the present were evident across the excavated area.
