Description
Stoa of Eumenes. M. Briana (Α’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on a series of investigations undertaken in 2004 to assess the problem of drainage from the Stoa spring and to identify the ancient water system (Figs 1,3). The chronology of the north retaining wall of the stoa was also examined.
The spring basin (1.06 x 0.49m) was cleared. At a depth of 0.85m hydraulic mortar was revealed which covered the bottom of the basin. In its NW corner was a drainage channel trapezoidal in section. Finds included ostraka and fragments of terracotta tile and stone.
Excavation in front of the spring revealed a terracotta well shaft, water channels, an in situ section of overflow pipe, plus a floor of Hymettan marble plaques (53.2 x 32.1m) (Figs 2,4). The very fragmentary pottery from the trench, which spanned the third century BC to the post-Byzantine era, did not allow precise dating of the spring or the north retaining wall of the stoa.
Excavation east of the interior of the western internal stylobate of the stoa revealed a foundation layer of earth and small stones beneath the stylobate. A single Hellenistic ostrakon was found within this layer directly beneath the stylobate.
