Description
Kato Mamoulada. Ph. Saranti (ΛΣτ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the investigation in 2005-6 of extensive Middle Helladic settlement remains on a hill 2.5km northwest of Naupaktos (Fig. 1). Buildings are arranged on terraces: an area of 0.2ha was investigated, covering the second terrace below the summit (Fig. 2). The summit is defined on the north side by massive rocks, below which was a strongly built wall. In the area west of the wall, layers of natural rock contained much pottery, and natural hollows black fill. Parts of many orthogonal and curved buildings built of loosely-fitted unworked stones were investigated in the remaining area, especially to the west, continuing up towards the summit. At the southern edge of this terrace, where the walls had been breached and probably tumbled downslope, the beaten earth or pebble floors of the buildings were preserved beneath a shallow surface fill, with many broken vessels in situ (Fig. 3). Burnt bone and strong traces of burning were preserved on many floors.
