Description

Chania Gavrolimnis. Ph. Saranti (ΛΣτ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the 2006 excavation season in the Middle and Late Helladic settlement (Figs 1,2), which revealed more of Building A (a well-built rectangular structure 15.4 x 5.5m). The final phase of this building dates to the LH period, and inside there is evidence of at least two construction phases with stone paved floors separated by fill. Building A was constructed on top of an older, well-built apsidal structure, Building B, which contained at least one tomb contemporary with the building. Other buildings in the settlement were more closely defined, notably Building Δ (maximum preserved dimensions 12 x 3.3m) (Fig. 3). Immediately to the west of the excavation, parts of two further structures (Στ and Ζ) were observed on the surface at a higher level in the settlement. Building Στ dates to the beginning of the Mycenaean period and is preserved to a height of 1.1m.

Two further sites on the same side of the Gavrolimni valley remain to be explored. A few building remains are visible at the first, ca. 350m east of Chania; if this is an extension of the Chania site, it indicates a large settlement presumably covering the plain between the two slopes. At the second site, ca. 700m northeast of Chania on the southern slopes of Mt Kaliakouda, well-preserved building remains can be observed on several levels.
