Description
Corinthia - Chiliomodi - Ancient Tenea. Dr Elena Korka (Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture) reports on discoveries made during this year’s systematic excavation at Chiliomodi in Ancient Tenea.
The 2022 excavation uncovered the domestic area of the Classical town of Tenea. A 145 m² public building yielded Archaic and Classical pottery, including miniature vases, lamps, and figurines depicting deities, banqueters, birds, and horses, as well as coins from 4th-century BC Corinth, including a drachma and hemidrachm. Moreover, part of the early Classical retaining walls at the edge of the town was uncovered (Fig. 1).
Roman Tenea continues to produce remarkable finds; in the commercial area near the Roman baths, the excavation of a building complex was completed, while three new identical shops, along the east-west artery, were discovered, each featuring an underground storage area (Fig. 2). These shops are chronologically linked to the earliest construction phases of the baths.
At the intersection of the main road, a new room was excavated. Here, various finds were recovered with most exceptional the discovery of 2.100 coins from the 5th and 6th centuries AD, as well as a bronze coin from 4th c. BC Aegina (Fig. 3). Additionally, a Roman funerary monument with an underground burial chamber was uncovered, containing five built burial niches. Finally, a 130 m² water reservoir was brought to light.
