Description
Sotirios Raptopoulos (Ephorate of Antiquities of Arta), Andromachi Mpaladima (Ephorate of Antiquities of Arta) and Ioannis Kotsokostas (Ephorate of Antiquities of Arta) report on the excavations during the construction of Ionia Odos motorway in Arta.
Sikoula – Kompoti district at Profitis Ilias hill (km 125+300-700).
The excavation revealed building remains of an agricultural settlement (Fig. 1). One of its buildings included a cistern (Fig. 2) and has been identified as a wine production laboratory (Fig. 3). Parts of a clay vessel and 2 glass vessels were found inside the cistern.
Agricultural settlement remains: a large pithos dated to the Roman times (dolium) was found inside a small building (Fig. 4,5). An unidentified structure made of bricks was found to the E of the building and a disturbed burial to the N. Pottery sherds found in the broader area are dated to the Classical, Hellenistic and Late Roman times.
Kampi-Ammotopos district (E of Kampis and Pente Pigadion street, km 152+844 – 152+860)
Foundation remains and several finds such as pottery sherds, iron nails and a bronze pin were dated to the Hellenistic times (Fig. 6).
The excavation on the edge of ‘Kokkino Lithari’ hill revealed building remains (Fig. 7). Finds from the area are dated to the Late Bronze age. In the S section of the hill, a grave contained 4 skeletons, a bronze ring and a clay drinking vessel (Fig. 8). Hellenistic pottery sherds as well as parts of dedicatory plaques found to the east of the hill probably suggest the existence of a storeroom for dedications and a small agricultural sanctuary that did not preserve any building remains.
The excavation continued across from the ‘Kokkino Lithari’ hill (on the edge of Kastri hill) revealing several finds and architectural remains dated to the Bronze Age. A few meters to the E, part of a peribolos was also discovered (Fig. 9).
In 2016 the excavation continued at the edge of Kastri hill (km 154+178) revealing a double room structure (Building A) (Fig. 10) and a peribolos dated from the prehistoric to the late Hellenistic times.
Excavation to the NE of Building A (km 154+165~150) revealed a grave containing skeletal remains of 5 burials. The grave was built by limestone and has been date to the Mycenaean period. Grave goods: bronze, stone and gold jewellery (Fig. 11,12,13).
