Kalamata - 2015
Kalamata
Kalamata. M. Kappas and M. Kamitsi (Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia), report on the excavation held during the construction of the motorway. The excavation revealed 2.000 m2 parts of an old aqueduct 500 meters NE of the Kalamata castle.
The aqueduct could be dated between the Roman and the Middle Byzantine times, the remains indicated at least one water spring in the Panagitsa site, and it passed through the area N of the byzantine St. Demetrius church, on the basis of the Tourles hill (fig. 1). It was constructed with raw stones and layered with tiles, and the large water pipe was on its upper surface (fig. 2). A second part of pipes, overlapping with each other, was located towards the S, and they possibly dated in the Roman times.
