Sparta - 2014
Sparta. Maria Tsouli (Ephorate of Antiquities of Lakonia) reports the following:
Recent research has taken place on the funerary landscape of Roman Sparta, concerning the organized cemeteries in the southern part of the city, as well as the monumental funerary buildings at Sparta’s periphery. In particular, there has been recent excavation conducted at the Karavassos plot (in Sparta’s BB 155), where a new funerary construction of monumental dimensions came to light. There are topographical issues concerning the Karavassos funerary monument in relation to the city’s Hellenistic fortification wall and the location of the fortification wall’s South Gate. Its relation both to the most important road of ancient Sparta, the Aphetais Road, as well to the Hyakinthis road, leading from Sparta to Amyklai and the Sanctuary of Apollo, can be examined.
