Ancient Epidauros - 2009
Ancient Epidauros. Maria Sofikitou (DIAZOMA) reports the following:
Excavations were carried out during the years 2008–2009 in the ancient Agora of the sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus. The Ancient Agora was an elongated rectangular building in the shape of an open portico. It is located in the western part of the Asclepieion and more specifically to the northwest of the Ancient Stadium. The remains of the Ancient Agora were first revealed by Panagis Kavvadias, but mistakenly identified as a hippodrome. The 2008-2009 project focused mainly on the re-excavation and study of a square building located in the northeastern end of the Agora, whose remains were partly visible. The new excavation revealed fully its porous foundations. Unfortunately, little material from its superstructure was found. The construction of the building is dated to the Hellenistic period, but it was used until late antiquity. Three major structural phases were identified by the excavators.
