Stadion - Ayios Konstantinos. Garyfallia Smerou (Ephorate of Antiquities of Arkadia) reports the following:
ABSTRACT. The low hill of Ayios Konstantinos at Stadion, just 1200 m east of the important Classical city of ancient Tegea, at the heart of the fertile Tegean plain, was inhabited throughout the Bronze Age. Rescue excavations carried out in 2006- 2008 revealed wall remains and a storage pithos, both dated to the Early Helladic II period, at its northern end. In the centre of the excavated area and almost at the top of the hill part of a Middle Helladic two-room rectangular building covering a surface of 47 m2 was discovered. Late Helladic remains comprise a few partially preserved walls in three different locations of the excavated area. The pottery includes, among other things, an interesting variety of Early Helladic and Middle Helladic wares, as well as several types of Late Helladic tablewares. The site’s central location along with the settlement’s size and continuity of occupation speak for its importance. The stratigraphy demonstrates this continuity, with the rare transition phases of EH III-MH I and MH III-LH I identified. This important prehistoric settlement was abandoned in the LH III period, when its inhabitants probably moved to the new centre that developed at the nearby location of Episkopi, Tegea.
