Corinth - 2016
Archaia Korinthos, Palaia
Corinth. Vassilis Tasinos (Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinth) reports the following:
Rescue excavations conducted as part of the road works on the Corinth-Patras National Road (Olympia Odos) in Ancient Corinth from 2008 to 2016 furnished new and invaluable information regarding the controversial Mycenaean period of the city-state of Corinth. They revealed extensive building remains, including workshops, burial clusters, and other structures. The excavated buildings date primarily to the mature Late Helladic period (LH IIB/LH IIIB, 13th c. BC), although remains of buildings dating to the Late Helladic I-IIA and Late Helladic IIIC periods early were also revealed. The remarkable state of preservation of some buildings proved to be very instructive in terms of the infrastructure and domestic architecture of this period in Corinth. Of singular importance was the unexpected discovery of an extensive workshop within the city limits, its main use being the production, processing, and storage of clay. The existence of such a workshop, as a result of a highly-organized central or local administration, is certainly indicative of Corinth’s leading role in the Mycenaean period, as compared to other contemporary settlements in the wider region, such as Korakou, Gonia, Perdikaria, or Dorati.
