Kampi and Alikanas. C. Giardino (University of Salento), A. Guidi (Roma Tre University), A. Tavoularis, I. Sarantidis and V. Sarris (Ephorate of Antiquities of Zakynthos) report on the first season of an intensive surface survey project conducted in the northern part of Zakynthos, aiming to locate prehistoric sites.
Surface survey was carried out on the plain E of Kampi, where in the 1970s 14 pit graves of the Mycenaean period had been located. No finds were located in the cultivated fields; but on the small peninsula SE of the cemetery fragments of ceramic and obsidian blades (probably of the Neolithic period) were identified, along with charred remains. Pottery sherds were also found in the olive groves and fields N of Kampi.
The other area of investigation was around Alikanas, where a house and a vaulted tomb of the Mycenaean period had previously been discovered. Although excavations in this area have located the remains of a stone wall and some fragments of pottery, survey in this area yielded very little.
