Description
Bourouni (or Ammoudi), Agios Nikolaos. G. Brokalakis (13th EBA) reports on excavation and restoration (Figs 1,2,3,4) conducted in 2005−2006 at the church of Ag. Nikolaos, Bourouni (ΑΕΚ 1 [2010], 223−32). Inscriptions (Fig. 5) on the dome are noted. Pairs of rectangular holes (later infilled with stones and plaster) high on the north (Fig. 6) and south (Fig. 7) walls likely anchored a wooden support structure used in the erection of the dome. On the exterior, similar, if smaller, holes secured scaffolding. A clay pipe in the southwest corner of the roof channelled rain-water to a cistern to the north (Fig. 8). Investigations along the outside of the south wall and at the southeast corner, prompted by finds such as a marble pillar base (Fig. 9) and an Early Byzantine brooch (Fig. 10), revealed four graves, comprising three pits (one with a double burial) and a cist. The double burial (of a woman and child) contained bronze jewellery (pendants of Western saints [Figs 11), a necklace of 68 bone beads (Fig. 14) and a reliquary wrapped in paper (Figs 15,16,17) which contained leaves, cotton, a crystal and a bronze coin of Comnenus (AD 1176−1180) (Fig. 18). The cist tomb was well-built of local limestone: it too held two burials. A ‘false’ coin was placed in the mouth of the deceased, and a bone pendant (Fig. 19) and a later Venetian tornesello were also offered.
