Description
Ancient Ilia. Georgia Em. Hatzi (Z’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the continuation of the excavation at this site (Figs. 1 - 3). Part of a column, fragments of roof-tiles and sherds were collected as well as fragments of red and grey marble, which must have been parts of the internal lining of the walls with marble. Furthermore, a destruction layer and a wall made from spolia were located (Figs. 4 - 5).
Insula 16 revealed part from antefix, the base of a glass vessel, fragment of a lion head – shaped gutter embellishment (Fig. 6) and a Hellenistic coin from Ilis (Figs. 7 - 9)
In section H, a roof-tile tomb from later antiquity was found. Traces of fire were located around and inside the burial (Fig. 10). The upper part of the skeleton was destroyed (Fig. 11). Samples of coal were collected from around and inside an amphora (Fig. 12). The layers identified were dated in the third and the fourth century BC. The findings were dated in those periods (base of black-glazed skyphos dated in the fourth century BC, metal nail etc.) (Figs. 13 - 14). It was noteworthy that the bones from the right leg were not placed in the correct anatomical position (Fig. 15).
