Description
Vartholomio - Tragani Site (private properties of I. – K. Panagiotopoulou, A. Fligkou). Christos Matzanas (Z’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on discoveries made during excavation at this site; Two mounds containing 80 tombs, dated between the Neolithic and the Late antiquity, with main use during the Roman period, were found (Figs. 1 - 3). Trial trenches at the property of I. - K. Panagiotopoulou revealed 60 tombs. Many of them were half- destroyed (Fig. 4). The E part of the Tymbos I was located at the property of A. Fligkou (Figs. 5 - 7). Three clusters made up Tymbos II (A, B and C).
The burials were mostly tile-roof burials, and some decoration with fingernails in the roof tiles (dated between the seventh and the fifth century AD) was spotted in some cases. Another type of roof tiles found were Laconian roof tiles (figs. 8 - 9).
An interesting example of a roof – tile tomb was tomb no. 30. The tiles had spiral decoration with fingermarks. A heart- shaped rock was found over the thorax. The tomb was dated between the end of sixth century and the beginning of seventh century AD. Tibiae were placed in anatomical position over the thorax; this could be an ante mortem punishment or due to peri mortem disturbance (Figs. 10-11).
Similar forms of punishment were seen in tomb no. 33, which was also a roof-tile tomb, containing a skeleton with decorative fingermarks over the tibiae. The lower part of the tibiae was cut, perhaps in a similar way as mentioned in the previous tomb. It was oriented E-W (figs. 12-13).
There was also an infant burial in tomb no. 47a, (fig. 14), but the burials were mostly of adults or young adults.
The presence of prehistoric burials was evident, contained in the same sepulchral complex.
Tomb no.1 was the first tomb in mound II and belonged to cluster C (E-W orientation) (Fig. 15). Three sherds, object from flintstone, a copper earing and a copper pellet, as well as three metal circular objects, were found. It was dated in the middle of fifth century.
Tomb no. 2 belonged to cluster A, Mound I. It was a prehistoric jar-burial in the half of a pithos vessel, with no evidence of ashes. It was dated in the later Neolithic times, in the middle of 4th millennium.
