Karies - Isoma site - 2011
Ano Karia, Karyes
Karies - Isoma site. Stamatis Frintzilas (ΛΘ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the rescue excavation held in Karies village. This excavation took place due to the construction process for a new National Company of Electricity (ΔΕΗ) substation, during which part of the backbone and the ivory tooth of an elephant was found.
The rest of the skeletal remains of the elephant were probably destroyed due to the construction process for the electric substation, considering the excavation of the area was up to the edge of the elephant’s ivory tooth (fig. 1).
An ancient street was found near the elephant’s remains, oriented NW-SE. The street was downward and it was built with coarse stones and pebbles (fig. 2). The area was excavated and the pottery found was mostly cookingware and black painted sherds, dated in the Archaic and Classical times. Other findings included an iron spear head (fig. 3) and loomweights.
