Ancient Oresteion, Megalopolis - Potistika site - 2011
Orestion, Kasidochori
Ancient Oresteion, Megalopolis - Potistika site. Stamatis Frintzilas (ΛΘ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the continuation of the systematic excavation held in the ancient Arkadian city of Oresteion, dated in the classical and archaic times. The excavation took place due to construction of a new motorway, connecting Tripoli to Kalamata. The excavation was wrapped up in various trenches, while new trial trenches were dug into already excavated areas, in an effort to date them (fig. 1,2).
The excavation revealed a multitude of new areas and spaces (figs. 1-2). The layers revealed were dated between the Geometric and the Roman times. Many areas revealed were workshop areas, related to textile, metal and pottery processing, mostly during the Classical times (fig. 3). Amongst findings were mostly metal and pottery workshop production remains, as well as painted pottery, such as one decorated by the depiction of the Centaur Battle (fig. 4), and clay figurines, such as one seated female figure (fig. 5), or the plastic decoration depicting a Medusa’s head (fig. 6).
