Klindia - Vouzani - 2010
Klindia
Klindia - Vouzani. Zacharoula Leventouri and Argyro Grigoraki (Z’ EPKA) report on the excavation held in the village of Klindia. The excavation took place due to illegal excavation in the area, and it revealed ten chamber tombs, five of which had been plundered (fig. 1).
The tombs were arranged in five lines, four of which were oriented N-S, while one was oriented E-W. They were carved in tuff-stone, which must have been one of the factors contributing to the site’s selection (easy to carve, yet firm and steady). Other reasons may have included the existence of water nearby. The tombs were family burials, contained few grave-goods (limited types of pottery vessels), and they were dated in the late Helladic times (LHIIIA1-LHIIIB).
Chamber Tomb no. 11 (fig. 2) was oriented N-S, with its entrance towards the N. It had an ellipsoid plan, a wide and short dromos, and it contained four undisturbed burials, one of which was a child burial.
The first burial was of a female individual, placed in flexed position in the E side of the chamber. The deceased held an infant in her arms, whose head touched its mother’s chin and was supported by a ring-shaped handle kyathos. Furthermore, bronze plates were found down and around the infant’s head, as well as an animal-shaped figurine found on its W side (fig. 3). A few more pottery vessels were placed around the deceased adult’s head as grave-goods.
The second burial was placed in the center of the chamber, in flexed position. An alabastron, a ring-shaped handle kyathos and a bronze scraper (fig. 4) were found near the deceased.
One more burial was found in the tomb’s W side. The deceased was placed in flexed position and there were no grave-goods.
