Patras - road to industrial area - 2011
Patra, Patras, Patrai, Patrae
Regional Route towards Industrial Area (private property of L. Giannopoulou), Rural Area Around Patras. Vasiliki Tsaknaki reports on the excavation held in the S side of the plot, which revealed an archaic building (fig. 1).
The building was oriented N-S, and it must have been used until the late Classical times. The walls and their foundations were built mostly of local limestone and unworked stone, in the polygonal style. The foundations followed the soil’s natural inclination towards the E.
The building was built in a tripartite arrangement in its W part (and probably on its E too). The middle area was twice the size of the other two, and it was separated in the N-S axis in a later phase of the building. A fireplace (hestia) was found in the SW corner of the area, while the W part and both the other two areas on the side were covered by destruction layers. The destruction layers consisted of Corinthian and Laconic roof tiles, and the excavators noticed signs of fire.
A trial trench alongside the E side of the plot revealed two consecutive levels of roads, made of pebbles and pressed soil.
