Spiliaria
Sgornes, Elliniko Sphliari plot. Property of E. Mavromataki. Maria Skordou (ΚΕ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that 23 ceramic vessels were handed over by E. Mavromataki, artefacts that were found on her plot. Five vessels were intact, two partially preserved, and 16 in a fragmentary state. The assemblage included red-painted pelisses, aryballoid lekythoi, skyphoi, oval lekythoi and pyxides with lids, dating to the fourth century B.C.
The property from which the vessels came is located on top of a hill on an extensive cemetery. A small excavation took place after Mrs Mavromataki reported the finds, bringing to late remains of a cist grave (Fig. 1), 1.50m in length and 0.30–0.14m in height. The N part of the grave was disturbed, while on the NE boundary six ceramic vessels were found (Fig. 2). These ceramics were Corinthian skyphoi, black-painted lekythoi, unpainted jugs and two oval lekythoi, all of the fourth century B.C.
During excavation, many sherds were found on the embankment, and some skull fragments and teeth were also disturbed.
