Property of G. Tsirantonakis, Livadakia - 2008
Livadaki
Property of G. Tsirantonakis, Livadakia. Sofia Preve (ΚΕ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that during October 2008 a two-day excavation took place at the property in the area of Koufos-Gavranou in Kydonia, south of the village of Patelari. Prior to the excavation, G. Tsirantonakis had handed a small amount of pottery from this site as well as a worn bronze coin from a nearby site. The land owner became aware of the presence of ceramic vessels on his field, after one was found in one of its slopes while conducting work with heavy machinery (Fig. 1).
The section above the berm where stratigraphy is visible was cleaned as much as possible. The finds were discovered at a layer between the cultivated surface and a layer of compact red soil with no finds (Fig. 2. Many of the fragments of the vessels were covered by parts of the rock and can be found inside the slope. Most of the pottery belongs to the MM II-III period; some examples are a spouted vessel with rounded ridges, a perforated cooking dish fragment, pithos fragments, a handless conical cup etc.
Additionally, from Koufos, a LM III stirrup jar was handed in 1961. At the area of Vatolakos, a village on the S of the aforementioned site, evidence of LM graves has been detected, as well as architectural remains, potentially of historical periods. At Fournes, SE of the area of Koufos-Gavranou, apart from a LM III funerary pithos, a Roman cluster of graves has been discovered, while in another spot the remains of a potential tower of the same period are visible. The site of Livadakia is part of the archaeological site of Vrises of Kydonia.
