Ancient Fygaleia, Trani Petra cemetery - 2014

Ancient Fygaleia, Trani Petra cemetery. Z. Leventouri (Z’ EPKA) reports on the excavation of the Hellenistic cemetery where illegal earthwork led to the revealing of another funerary monument. The grave was in the right side of a still existing ancient path, leading from Ancient Fygaleia’s agora to the village Stomio. It was rectangular, oriented N-S, and it consisted of two burial spaces (Fig. 1). The outside walls were made of large square stones, while the separating walls were made of smaller stones. The E position was completely disturbed by the illegal excavation, yet the excavators were able to find one silver Sikyon coin (370-250 BC), parts of an iron needle, vessels for liquid storage, clay lamps etc. The W position was partly disturbed. The burial was located, along with its grave goods: bronze mirror handle, bronze clothing decoration, part of iron nails and six silver coins of Sikyon, of Aigina and of Argos. Some clay vessels were also discovered (lamps, tear vessels, cups, oinochoe etc.). The pottery dates the sepulchral monument between the 2^nd and the first half of the 1^st century BC.
