Agios Vasileios area, construction part K187 D6, general area of the ancient quarry of Ancient Kleonai - 2014
Agios Vasileios area, construction part K187 D6, general area of the ancient quarry of Ancient Kleonai. Konstantinos Kissas (LZ’ EPKA) reports on the rescue excavations taking place in the area ranging between Agioi Theodoroi, Corinth and Megalopoli, due to the constructions of a gas pipe. During the construction works for the formation of a trench for the placement of the gas pipe last year, a rectangular building was located (Fig. 1). The excavation of it continued this year.
The SW part of the building was located, as well a small second space (SW). The votive fine ware pottery (sherds from vessels like kotyles, basins, kraters, pyxis and oenochoai) dated the building not before the 6th century BC. Furthermore, due to this pottery, the interpretation of usage of the space sacral, became more relevant.
After consulting KAS (Central Archaeological Council), walls one and two were partially deconstructed and placed again in the same exact position after the placement of the gas pipe in that particular spot (and given the fact that moving the gas pipe was no longer possible).
