Leoforos Knossou (Property of Dandalis Bakery), Heraklion - 2008
Leoforos Knossou (Property of Dandalis Bakery), Heraklion. Maria Mavraki Balanou (ΚΓ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that during excavation works for construction purposes, a small destruction layer (0.60x0.70m) consisting of collapsed small and medium-sized crude stones, pottery sherds, roof tiles of the past century and plaster remains, was discovered. After the removal of the destruction layer, the profile of a large jar of an earlier period, decorated with horizontal bands and ring-shaped engravings at the base of the handles was found (Fig. 1). A Byzantine pottery sherd with green glaze was also retrieved from the same deposit. After the cleaning it became apparent that the vessel has fallen around the base of the jar during the destruction, and as a result its fragments were found around and inside the jar. The jar was located almost in situ, slightly moved and destroyed from the building material of a nearby house, in another property at the N. This house was mostly covered by the modern deposit of the area until recently.
