Bridge K127 (kilometric position 16+910 – 16+920), Ancient Sikyon - 2014

Bridge K127 (kilometric position 16+910 – 16+920), Ancient Sikyon. Konstantinos Kissas (LZ’ EPKA) reports on the continuation of the excavation of an organized cemetery, most of which has been under investigation since 2010.

This excavation took place on the site Siryon, on the N of Assopos river, and this year it expanded to the N and lasted one month. It revealed 27 graves, dated between the Classical and the Roman period and most of them belonged to the 5^th century. They were of the following types: i) cist graves covered with clay tiles (Fig. 1,2) (4), ii) cist graves covered with one single-stoned plate (2) iii) cist graves, covered with slabs, either stone slabs, or rectangular headstones in second use (5), iv) cist graves, covered with soil (9), v) box-shaped graves, covered with one single-stone slab, or stones (2), vi) larnax/sarcophagus, covered with a slab (1), vii) larnax/sarcophagus covered with slabs or rectangular headstones in second use (2), viii) grave with rough (or lightly processed) walls, covered with soil (1), ix) pot burial in a large pithos (1). The graves don’t share a common orientation and the bodies (those which are preserved) were laid out both in an extended and in a flexed position.  The burials were of adult individuals and mostly single ones. They contained many grave goods (lekythoi, basins with lids, iron and bronze pins and miniature vessels), as well as pottery, dedicated to a specific burial or to the general worship of the dead.
